Your First Class

Tips for your first Zumba® fitness class:

  1. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A DANCER. to take Zumba® classes! You will have your own space to move in and work out the steps—and you won’t be judged on dancing ability. If you don’t get the steps right away, don't worry, just keep moving and enjoy the music. Remember, it's a party!
  2. WHAT TO WEAR: Dress comfortably in clothes that allow you to move. Or wear something fun that makes you feel good! Some students wear Bollywood scarves (we call them "booty bangles" in the Dimond). Ask your instructor if you'd like to order some Zumbawear!
  3. THE BEST SHOES are tennis shoes, cheerleading shoes, dance sneakers or cross trainers—all of these allow for lateral movement. (Running shoes are not as good.)
  4. BRING A WATER BOTTLE. Drink lots of water before, during and after class. It’s important to stay hydrated.
  5. COME EARLY. Take time for parking, finding the dance studio, meeting the instructor and other dancers, and filling out paperwork.
  6. PACE YOURSELF. Listen to your body. Do not go “all out” at the beginning. If you feel tired, breathe …. Slow down. Don’t use your arms, walk the steps. Your body needs to build endurance. You don’t have to do it all at once.
  7. HAVE FUN!!! You'll go home in a great mood.

More Tips:

  1. To maximize your energy and your workout, and to avoid feeling achy later, eat some carbs within an hour before exercise (so there's some fuel in your stomach to burn), and some protein and carbs within an hour afterwards to replenish your muscles.
  2. Zumba with a buddy. In our experience, the ones who stick with it are the ones who come with a friend. Ask our instructors if they have a 2 for 1 special.
  3. Get into it! Watch Zumba on Youtube or play it on the Wii.  The Wii teaches basic steps. Then come and enjoy a class.
  4. Tell people about your class. The more people, the better the energy!
